  1. Also know as East Germany, the DDR was proclaimed in the Soviet
  2. sector of occupied Germany on October 7, 1949.  East Germany
  3. became sovereign in 1954, but Soviet troops remain for security
  4. purposes based on the 4-power Potsdam agreement between the
  5. allies.  East Germany suffered severe economic problems through
  6. the 1960s when a "New Economic System" was introduced to ease
  7. central planning and create greater productivity.  By the 1970s
  8. the economy was highly industrialized and in May 1972 the few
  9. remaining private companies were sold to the government.  The
  10. nation has one of the highest standards of living in the
  11. communist world, but recent growth has slowed due to resource
  12. shortages and a severe foreign debt.                    @
